Making the most of 2012
7th October 2006, 13:24
North East MSP Richard Baker is urging cultural, sporting and tourism agencies in the region to make the most of London hosting the 2012 Olympic Games.
Scottish Executive Culture, Tourism and Sport Minister Patricia Ferguson today urged Scots to use the games to showcase the nation’s art, culture and world-class sporting facilities. Baker has called on everyone involved in promoting the North East to work together to capitalise on this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
Richard Baker said:
"The North East has shown it can successfully host major sporting events, such as the British Seniors Open last year and continues to attract top-level competitions such as the 2009 European Curling Championships. With a new Regional Sports Facility on the way, the North East will have world-class facilities to offer athletes from around the world and I hope individuals and teams will choose to prepare for the games in our part of Scotland.
"I was delighted that the Olympic Roadshow recently visited Aberdeen, after lobbying from myself and Frank Doran MP for it to visit the city. The reaction of the Aberdeen public showed the enthusiasm there is in the North East for the London Olympics. I hope Aberdeen can play a major role, not only in the 2012 games, but in helping bring the 2014 Commonwealth Games to Glasgow."
Baker added:
"Visitscotland and other agencies are already working hard to bring tourists to the North East and I hope local authorities will work with the agency to make sure our region attract some of the huge numbers of tourists likely to visit the UK for the Olympic Games."
