Construction work underway on all 2012 Olympic Village residential plots

4th August 2009, 16:52

New images released by the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) today show the strong progress being made on the construction of the 2012 Olympic Village where building work is now underway on track on all of the residential plots.

Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) Director of Property Ralph Luck said: 'We are continuing to make good progress on the Olympic Village site and with construction work now underway on all residential plots we are seeing the building blocks of a brand new community for east London beginning to take shape. The strong start we have made on the Olympic Village site over the past year puts us firmly on track to deliver a high quality new development for generations to come.'

The Olympic Village will comprise 11 residential plots, which are each roughly the same size as a football pitch. Each residential plot is then made up of 6 – 8 buildings built in a rectangular layout around a traditional courtyard area. Construction work started on site last summer and the huge progress on site over the past year includes:
  • Construction work now underway on all 11 residential plots
  • The first residential buildings in the Village already making their mark on the east London skyline with some buildings approaching their full height
  • Earthworks underway on the site of Chobham Academy - a world-class education campus to be built within the Olympic Village with spaces for 1,800 students aged 3 – 19
  • Over 4,000 concrete piles installed more than 20m deep to form the foundations of the Village blocks
  • Work well underway to install new electricity, gas, water, drainage and district heating services between the sites of the new housing blocks
  • Major infrastructure works including the lifting into place of two major railway bridges and new railway sidings to allow delivery of construction materials by rail to minimise congestion and pollution in east London
The Olympic Village, which lies adjacent to the Olympic Park and Stratford City sites, will accommodate athletes during the Olympic and Paralympic Games. After 2012, the Village will leave a lasting legacy for east London including:

New homes for Londoners
  • 2,818 new homes in legacy including 1,379 affordable homes
  • Family housing with nearly 1,000 three and four bed homes.
New parklands, courtyards and open space
  • Courtyard areas with gardens, play areas and open space
  • More than 10 hectares of new parks and open space
  • New public squares, tree-lined streets, and landscaped courtyards.
Education and community facilities
  • Multi-use community facilities
  • A world-class education campus, Chobham Academy, with 1,800 places for students aged 3-19.
