YouTube slaughter of uploaded Beijing Olympic Ceremony videos begins

8th August 2008, 14:43

The slaughter of videos posted onto YouTube showing the Beijing Olympics Opening Ceremony has begun as overpaid legals go to town pulling video footage off the site. This is sure to cause a mighty big ruckus with many YouTube users as they see their videos removed and their accounts deleted. This is something that really gets up my nose because none of the major networks have uploaded any footage of the ceremony onto YouTube so far,yet they don't want anyone else doing it. How much are we paying the BBC or the other networks for this

Re: YouTube slaughter of uploaded Beijing Olympic Ceremony videos begins

Seems these broadcasting rights are the only things that are spoiling the whole occassion with these uploaded Beijing Olympic Ceremony videos being removed pretty promptly, but I've noticed many users are now fighting back by uploading spoof videos containing no copyrighted material. Long may this continue

Personally I can see the funny side to this as the legal teams employed to ruin the fun and enjoyment of millions of users who haven't seen the opening Olympics Ceremony will have to trawl through 1000's of these spoof videos.

I can see this application of these spoof videos spreading to other videos on YouTube as users become increasingly annoyed with the actions of large and greedy corporations such as the high and mighty, or as some might say very stroppy corporations set to feel the brunt of YouTube user hatred., the top 20 corporations responsible for removing most videos on YouTube for copyright reasons is currently.
  1. Viacom International Inc.
  2. TV TOKYO Corporation
  3. World Wrestling Entertainment, Inc.
  4. Association of Copyright for Computer Software
  5. Dattebayo Fansubs, LLC
  6. Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc.
  7. Fuji Television Network, Inc.
  8. UEFA
  9. NBC Universal
  10. NetResult
  11. FremantleMedia Group Limited
  12. Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation
  13. GMA Network Incorporated
  14. MLB Advanced Media
  15. National Football League
  16. BBC Worldwide Ltd.
  17. Warner Music Group
  18. Dick Clark Productions, Inc.
  19. TV- Asahi Corp.
  20. FUNimation Entertainment
It's not as if these 5 or 10 minute low resolution clips on YouTube are going to hurt the revenues of these giants, they're just greedy bas*ards

Re: YouTube slaughter of uploaded Beijing Olympic Ceremony videos begins

9th August 2008, 20:28

I find this attitude very short-sighted and very disappointing indeed. Many people were at work when the opening ceremony of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games took place so weren't able to watch it. Later in the evening the highlights were shown to UK viewers on BBC1, but once again, people not living in the UK were barred from watching the ceremony.

I appreciate that these broadcasting rights generate a great deal of money for many companies, but I believe that fair usage exceptions should be respected on YouTube.

The following excerpts copied from Wikipedia:

Quote:
The legal concept of "Test copyright" was first ratified by the Kingdom of Great Britain's Statute of Anne of 1709. As room was not made for the authorized reproduction of copyrighted content within this newly formulated statutory right, the courts gradually created a doctrine of "fair abridgment," which later became "fair use," that recognized the utility of such actions. The doctrine only existed in the U.S. as common law until it was incorporated into the Copyright Act of 1976, 17 U.S.C. § 107, reprinted here::

Notwithstanding the provisions of sections and , the fair use of a copyrighted work, including such use by reproduction in copies or phonorecords or by any other means specified by that section, for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching (including multiple copies for classroom use), scholarship, or research, is not an infringement of copyright. In determining whether the use made of a work in any particular case is a fair use the factors to be considered shall include:
  1. the purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of a commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes;
  2. the nature of the copyrighted work;
  3. the amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole; and
  4. the effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work.
YouTube video deletions will simply alienate their customer base which is not just confined to just that deleted video, but also to that user who loses his or YouTube account and all the videos he's uploaded which are subsequently deleted - even those that aren't subject to copyright infringement, but YouTube also alienating every website that's linked to that particular YouTube video and all their users who want to view the video.

I've also noted that many posts marked as 'spam' are from ex-users who have been deleted for whatever reason from YouTube, many of these posts are not actually 'Spam'. YouTube are actually wide open to legal action by ex-users because this actually is deformation of character. Any lawyers reading this may be rubbing their hands together with glee at the thought of such a massive class action.

A pity really considering that five or ten minute low resolution videos hardly present any reasonable threat to the original videos, if anything I would argue that sales would increase following worldwide exposure.

Out of sight - out of mind!

I just read this on sochi2014.com

IPC Launches YouTube Channel

06.08.08

Today, the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) has taken further action to promote Paralympic sports and the Paralympic Movement by launching a Channel on YouTube™, the leading online video community that allows people to discover, watch and share originally created videos.

From today on, fans of Paralympic Sport can go to www.YouTube.com/ParalympicSportTV to watch clips of Paralympic sports, athletes and events. Viewers of ParalympicSport.TV on YouTube can enjoy the different features YouTube offers: they can subscribe to the Channel, watch, rate and comment the latest video clips and upload their own videos and much more.

Not only will the IPC regularly upload a selection of video clips from the IPC's internet TV channel www.ParalympicSportTV but also encourages Paralympic athletes and all fans of Paralympic Sport to upload their Paralympic content on the YouTube channel. Video clips uploaded by IPC will include athlete portrays, sport features, event reports and trailers of the monthly ParalympicSport.TV magazine paraEmotion.

During the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games daily news clips will be published on the YouTube Channel to keep viewers up to date about what happens in Beijing.

Said IPC President Sir Philip Craven: "Having a site on YouTube will help to further raise awareness for the Paralympic Movement. I encourage everyone out there to utilize this feature and upload any video that could provide another glimpse into the Paralympic world".

Watch Paralympic sports from all over the world on www.YouTube.com/ParalympicSportTV.

You'd think the IOC would use the same initiative wouldn't you?

Fiona, YouTube do have a special Beijing 2008 Olympics channel, though this channel is only available in some countries - the UK & USA is NOT on this authorised list!

The link to this channel on YouTube is www.youtube.com/beijing2008

Olympic Broadcasting Services which is a wholly owned subsidiary of the IOC, will produce regularly updated Olympic content. The package will include highlights, news and daily clips of the competitions, available throughout the 17-day period of the Games.

The International Olympic Committee Channel will be accessible in territories where digital video on demand rights have not been sold or have been acquired on a non-exclusive basis.

The countries where this Beijing 2008 YouTube channel will be available are:

So users from France, Spain, Germany, UK and the USA, plus New Zealand, Australia and the host country China, and many other countries not on this list are banned from viewing this Beijing2008 page on YouTube, yet the rest of the world can view it!

This sucks big style!

And we complain that China censors websites on the internet, yet one of the biggest sites on the internet which is based in the USA, is actively blocking users from viewing because of broadcasting rights - this really is sick!

There was me thinking the www meant the World Wide Web, so much for the US Constitution and freedom of speech, well you can listen to and watch the video unless...blah, blah, blah

Thx for the info, no wonder no one is posting any video footage onto YouTube of the Beijing Olympics or the opening ceremony, explains why so many photos are being shown in place of videos.

The site YouTomb http://youtomb.mit.edu/ is an eye-opener especially revealing how many videos are being removed on YouTube and by whom, does explain the growing resentment against Viacom International Inc. by many YouTube users - Take a LOOK at the video removal statistics http://youtomb.mit.edu/statistics

Not so much a "slaughter" as a "massacre" of uploaded videos and YouTube user accounts.

Latest scam to affect YouTube is the revelation videos and users being deleted by other YouTube users for false breach of copyright claims because (a) they don't like the video, or (b) they don't like the user!

Claiming copyright and deleting users is a synch, while counterclaiming is such a ball ache when surelly it should be the other way around when the claimant who swears "I swear, under penalty of perjury, that I have a good faith belief that the material I wish removed or disabled as a result of a mistake or misidentification of the material to be removed or disabled is my copyright."

Don't you believe me, well try it for yourself, go pick a BBC or ITN or Viacom videos for 'experimental' purposes only, click on 'Flag' then click on 'select a reason' then 'Infringes my rights', select ' infringes my copyright' ---- now look what happens --- even before you can click on 'Flag this video' Youtube posts the automated message:

Quote:
"Thank you for sharing your concerns. We can only process copyright complaints submitted by authorised parties in accordance with processes defined in law. There may be significant legal penalties for false notices. Please refer to our Help Centre for more information and the complete instructions."
Somethings not right here. How many YouTube users have lost their accounts and seen their videos deleted due to idiots 'accidentally' clicking on copyright issues? I only found out tonight after an 'accidental' error!!! Sorry YouTube management but you stink CORR UPTION

I hope many more 'accidental' copyright errors will occur to the big corporate channels on YouTube, in fact why the f*ck are they on here! YouTube should reestablish its roots for the man on the street not the bloated multinational fat bas*ards, let's kick em off youtube and send them back to their TV channels wher they belong.

If Youtube carry on as they are doing theres going to be a mass exedous of users to the next video platform!?!
