City businesses back Hayley's bid for London Olympics glory
16th February 2008, 14:33
TWO Chester business organisations have stepped forward with financial support for an up-and-coming water polo player from Vicar's Cross who has Olympic aspirations.
Hayley Langridge, 15, who has been playing since the age of 10, was selected for the Great Britain youth water polo squad last year.
She is now training for the European Youth water polo championships which will be held in Hungary in September 2008, but her eyes are already firmly set on a place in the national team for the 2012 Olympics in London.
Hayley trains for 13 hours a week at Chester and Liverpool and, in addition, has training weekends and camps with the GB squad, at locations in England and Europe. She plays for Chester in the under 16s and Liverpool in the under 16s, under 18s and women's team, and has also represented Cheshire and the North West in regional competitions.
She was a member of the under 16s City of Liverpool team that won the ASANational Championships in July and was a key player, scoring three goals, in the 7-4 victory. She plays for Liverpool in Division Two of the Women's National League, where she spends one weekend each month competing at different venues in England.
Hayley has just been selected to go to Holland at the end of October and will play against the Dutch National team.
Her mother, Kim, said: "Hayley is 100 per cent committed to her training and water polo. But, of course, also has to juggle studying for her GCSE exams with training and competing and is working extremely hard to achieve her potential academically as well as in water polo where her ultimate aim is to represent GB in the 2012 Olympics."
Chester Business Club has contributed £500 towards Hayley's training expenses, with the prospect of another £500 later this year, and Chester Race Company has also made a donation of £250.
