A major new photographic commission, the National Portrait Gallery/BT 'Road to 2012' project, launched today ahead of the 1,000 days to the London 2012 Olympic Games milestone.
The project will create a photographic record of the people across the UK - both high-profile and behind the scenes - who collectively are making the Games happen.
The first group of portraits, taken by internationally renowned photographer Brian Griffin, was unveiled at the launch today by Chair of the London 2012 Organising Committee Sebastian Coe and Dame Kelly Holmes.
They include Olympic gold medallists and Sports Ambassadors for the bid Jonathan Edwards and Denise Lewis; as well as Mike Dobriskey, a member of the Olympic Park decontamination team with his daughter 1,500m World Championship silver medallist Lisa Dobriskey.
The six portraits will be on display at the Gallery from 30 October – 5 November 2009.
A total of 100 world-class photographic portraits will be taken between now and 2012, displayed each summer and culminating in an exhibition during the Games.
BT, who is collaborating with the National Portrait Gallery on the project, was today also announced as a Premier Partner of the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad.
Seb Coe said: 'With 1,000 days to go on 31 October, millions of people are already joining in on our journey to London 2012.
'The portraits we are unveiling today showcase the stories of some of the people who have already played a key role in inspiring, delivering and benefitting from London 2012.
'We are delighted that BT is partnering the National Portrait Gallery – and is today becoming a Premier Partner of the Cultural Olympiad – which is already giving millions of people a chance to be part of London 2012.'
