Westminster Council rolls back the years with Christmas parking offer
30th November 2006, 23:30
Westminster City Council is offering motorists a blast from the past with its Christmas parking offer of just £5- the same price as it was over twenty years ago.
The last time motorists were charged £5 to park all day in Central London, Torvill and Dean won the Winter Olympics with the Bolero and Band Aid was the Christmas number one.
Trivial Pursuit was one of the most popular Christmas presents and the Ford Fiesta was the number one selling car in the UK.
This price freeze is part of a promotion designed to support the council's West End campaign and tempt more people back to Central London during the festive period. The £5 parking offer includes parking all day on Sundays and most weeknights during December.
Councillor Danny Chalkley, Cabinet Member for Economic Development and Transport, Westminster City Council said: "The West End takes on a magical feel over Christmas and this new parking measure will give added convenience to those who wish to drive into Central London to do their Christmas Shopping or go to the theatre.
"What makes the West End so special is the whole experience that a visit to it brings.
"The range of designer shops, department stores and specialist outlets is unequalled in the rest of the country, but we also boast a dizzying array of cuisine, a great selection of bars and the best theatre in the world."
What else was happening in the world in 1984?
