19th October 2005, 08:49
Thousands of youngsters participating in programs offered by LA's BEST, the Mt. San Antonio College Youth Days and several YMCAs in Southern California are the latest beneficiaries of the success of the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games.
The Board of Directors of the Amateur Athletic Foundation of Los Angeles (AAF), the legacy of the 1984 Olympic Games, approved grants to 12 organizations totaling $813,110. Since inception in 1984, the AAF has spent more than $153 million in its mission to serve youth through sport.
An additional $240,1941 was authorized to implement the Foundation's Run 4 Fun Program that reaches more than 2,000 youngsters at 50 middle schools in Southern California as well as for instructional clinics for high schools and community youth sports coaches.
"The Los Angeles Olympic Games succeeded in part because of the tremendous volunteer support from Los Angeles residents. We see this same type of effort in the various organizations that today are involving youngsters with quality sports experiences. We are grateful for their efforts and pleased that we can assist them," said AAF Chairman Peter V. Ueberroth.
