Berlin 1936 Olympic torch bearer Schilgen dies

Fritz Schilgen, the German athlete who lit the flame at the end of the first torch relay at the 1936 Olympics, has died at the age of 99.
Schilgen, a 1500 meter runner, carried the torch into the Olympic Stadium in Berlin on August 1, 1936. The tradition of bringing the torch from Olympia in Greece to the site of the Games has continued ever since.
Schilgen died on September 12, four days after his 99th birthday. He was buried on Monday in his home town of Krongberg near Frankfurt.
