Olympics Athens Roof
9th November 2005, 08:40
ATHENS, Greece The Greeks may be paying for their pre-Olympic procrastination. The main stadium used for the 2004 Athens Games is under repair.
The deputy culture minister who led government preparations for the Olympics says the project has "thousands of welded parts, and some of these parts needed to be welded again or strengthened."
One Athens' newspaper quotes a report delivered to the government by the contractor that says some of the roof's supports had been poorly aligned with gaps between them.
The synthetic glass-and-steel roof was the centerpiece of the Athens Games last year. It currently plays home to a couple of first-division soccer teams.
Much was made of the Greeks' effort, or lack thereof, in the years leading up to their Olympics. But a late push had everything in place by the time opening ceremonies rolled around.
