Blur to headline London 2012 Olympics Closing Ceremony Celebration Concert

21st February 2012, 09:23

Blur have announced they will play BT London Live, the 2012 Olympics Closing Ceremony Celebration Concert, with New Order & The Specials.

The band revealed via their Facebook page yesterday that they would be headlining the convert, which will take place in Hyde Park on 12 August. They announced the news with the message:

"We're rowing in.. going for gold.. grabbing the baton.. for the high jump.. No, hang on, is that right? Fact is, Blur have accepted the invite to headline the Olympics' Closing Ceremony Celebration Concert in Hyde Park on 12th August."

The concert will be accompanied by a BBC broadcast of the closing ceremony at the Olympic Park in East London, on giant screens set up in Hyde Park. Tickets for concert will go on sale this Friday 24 Feb at 9am, priced at £55, plus fees. The group tweeted the official concert poster this morning:

In 2009, Albarn was widely reported to be "a leading contender" to steer the Olympics' cultural programme as artistic director, a role which was eventually filled by director Danny Boyle.

The concert's special guests include Peter Hook, Stephen Morris, and Bernard Sumner of New Order, who reunited in December last year.

The Coventry band The Specials will also play. They reunited for a 30th anniversary tour in 2009, and, after playing a series of live events in 2011, suggested they might have been the last.

The Olympics concert is the group's second scheduled performance this year, with Blur's reunion one of the highlights of tonight's Brit Awards.

Blur's Damon Albarn and Graham Coxon will be honoured with the outstanding contribution award 21 years after their debut album Leisure.

On Sunday, at a charity pre-Brits concert at London's Shepherd's Bush Empire, the band performed three songs including a new song called Under The Westway.

Blur, which consists of Damon Albarn, Graham Coxon, Alex James and Dave Rowntree, went into a hiatus in 1999, and then again in 2003. In 2009 the band officially reunited and played Glastonbury and other summer festivals.
