LONDON 2012's volunteering programme is already over-subscribed - with just under a week to go until applications close.
Olympic organisers Locog need to sign up 70,000 volunteers, who will be known as Games Makers, in what they have described as the biggest recruitment exercise since World War II.
Applications for specialist positions opened in July and recruitment for general assignment roles started last month.
Aspiring volunteers must be 18 on January 1st 2012 and available to give their time for three days training and ten days during either the Olympics or Paralympics.
A separate recruitment process for 1,500 Young Games Makers - aged under 18 - will open next summer.
"We have had an amazing response to date, with over 100,000 people offering to lend their time in the summer of 2012," said London 2012 Seb Coe.
"We will be taking forward applications on merit, ensuring we match the best people to the right volunteer role for them.
"It is not necessarily the first off the blocks that go through and this is not a first come, first served opportunity."
Organisers have been tasked with making their volunteers as diverse as possible, drawn not just from the capital but from across the UK, from all backgrounds and communities.
They are also working hard to ensure people will disabled and deaf communities can volunteer their time.
