Amec knocked out of Olympics

22nd October 2005, 17:48

UK construction giant Amec has been knocked out of the bidding for the £1.7bn (E2.5bn, $3bn) contract to manage the building of London’s Olympic park, The Business has learned.

The Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA), the agency overseeing the tender, last week informed the companies that had successfully made the shortlist.

Amec does not appear to have been contacted, while sources close to the process said that UK construction giant Mace and Australia’s Lend Lease Projects both received letters inviting them to submit firm bids next month.

The sources did not know whether other leading bidders, who are thought to include US giants KBR and Parsons Brinckerhoff, and UK contractor Arup, have been invited.

The successful bidder for the programme manager job will run the construction of the Olympic stadium, the athletes’ village and several other facilities including an aquatics centre, a media centre and a hockey stadium.

The ODA aims to award the contract by the end of the year, but the tendering process is already more than three months behind schedule. Bidders originally expected to receive invitations to tender in July, when the London Development Authority (LDA) said it had already whittled down more than 20 expressions of interest to a six-strong shortlist.

Bidders attribute the delay to the handover of the tendering process to the ODA, which is still seeking a chief executive.

Mace, which is bidding in consortium with surveyor Davis Langdon and accountancy firm Deloitte, is seen as the frontrunner to win the contract, after drawing up the preliminary plans which were used to back London’s bid.

Conflicting views in the media....

Amec Still In The Running For Olympic Contract - Source

U.K. engineering company Amec PLC(AMEC.LN) has is on the shortlist of bidders who are vying for the project management contract to build London's Olympic park, after some other bidders were ruled out last week, a person close to the company told Dow Jones Newswires Sunday.

"Amec has received a letter saying that they're on the shortlist," said the person.

The company that wins the project management contract could earn between 5% and 10% of the GBP1.7 billion that the Olympic Delivery Authority - which is overseeing the park's construction - will spend to build the park.

The successful project management firm will manage the building of a complex to house athletes as well as all of the stadiums for competition.

The person familiar with the situation was speaking after U.K. newspaper The Business reported Sunday that Amec was not on the shortlist. The report said that Amec's U.K. construction rival Mace and Australia's Lend Lease Corp. Ltd. (LLC.AU) were on the shortlist.

It said other bidders included U.S. companies KBR, a unit of Halliburton (HAL), and Parsons Brinckerhoff (PBH.XX) and U.K. contractor Arup had bid for the contract, but didn't say whether they had made the shortlist.

A spokesman for Amec declined to comment.
