London 2012 gets tough on domain names

A businessman who registered five website names with the intention of cashing in on London's Olympic victory has been ordered to hand them over, according to yesterday’s Guardian newspaper. Travel agent Paul Smith, of York, said that lawyers for London 2012 demanded he relinquish the names, which he acquired the day after London's success was announced.

London 2012 had said previously that it intends to target businesses it suspects of taking advantage of the Olympics without having paid for the privilege. The organisation wishes to protect the value of legitimate sponsorship and promotional deals that could help to reduce the cost to taxpayers of hosting the event.

Mr Smith, of Quartz Travel, brought names including olympicsinuk.com and london2012beds.co.uk in order to tout for business from tourists seeking accommodation for the games.
