British Olympics to sue Benetton over use of symbols
15th September 2005, 12:32
The British Olympic Association has begun legal proceedings against Benetton for producing clothes carrying Olympic symbols.
The BOA is taking legal action against two subsidiaries of the clothing company to secure damages after Benetton produced a range of children's clothing featuring the Olympic Rings, the word 'Olympic' and, in one case, the word 'official'.
BOA lawyer Sara Friend said the legal action showed it would take 'all necessary steps to enforce its rights'.
The BOA contacted Benetton in March about the breach and the products were removed from UK retailers. But proceedings were issued last week as the question of damages was unresolved.
Under the Olympic Symbol etc (protection) Act 1995, only official partners of the BOA can use the Olympic Rings or the word Olympics.
