The 2012 Olympics Debate Building a Future for Sport and Education
14th November 2005, 19:31
The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) is holding a panel discussion on the delivery of sporting facilities for the Olympic Games on Wednesday 23 November from 9am-12pm at the RIBA, 66 Portland Place, London, W1.
The Rt Hon Richard Caborn MP Minister for Sport will provide the keynote address. Panel members representing the architectural profession, education sector and leisure industry include: Professor Geraint John, HOK Architects and Chris Earle, Director of Sports Development Centre at Loughborough University.
This event will consider how we can respond to this unique chance to reinvigorate sporting facilities across London and the whole country and, through design, improve the success of the Olympic Games. The panel will also discuss how schools and universities, in particular, can develop opportunities for 2012 and, beyond the Games, how we can ensure a positive legacy.
Speaking about the event, Nick Gibbs, RIBA Sports Forum Chair said:
The awarding of the 2012 Olympic Games to London brings with it tremendous challenges not all of which are related purely to sport. For those who are responsible for delivering public facilities fit for purpose, on time and to budget, the challenges are immense. If ever there was a moment when clarity, experience and understanding between clients, architects and contractors is important, then this is it.
The RIBA Client Forums for sport and education have a strong interest in how the 2012 construction project is managed and will disseminate the learning from it to the relevant professions. I fully expect the forums to run seminars and conferences, over the next seven years, to continue to do just that.
