Olympic hope Deng becomes first ever Brit to make NBA All-Star roster
12th February 2012, 09:48
Team GB basketball star Luol Deng has become the first ever British player selected to be part of an NBA All-Star roster.
This is a huge boost for the confidence and morale of Britain's men's basketball side in the build up to London 2012, with the 27-year-old having excelled for Chicago Bulls.
The forward has been a key figure in helping the Bulls to a league-best 22-6 win-loss record, averaging 16 points and a career-high 7.3 rebounds.
The delighted Deng posted on his Twitter account: 'Words can't describe how happy I am to make my first All-Star team. Thanks to all my supporters, especially the coaches who voted for me.
'To be a part of it, to say you are an All-Star. I am excited to get to Orlando and soak up the atmosphere, it really is a huge honour.'
Bulls head coach Tom Thibodeau said: 'You guys who follow our team, I think you understand how important he is to our team.
'Lu doesn't have to score to have a great impact on our team and winning. He plays great defence.
'He plays a great floor game. He moves without the ball. He makes the extra pass. And he has very good statistics, but you can't measure his impact statistically.
'I know what he brings. I know all the coaches and all his teammates appreciate everything that he does.'
Another sportsman quick to congratulate Deng was Aston Villa footballer Darren Bent, who tweeted: 'Congratulations to @LuolDeng9 for making the All-Star team, much deserved.'
Deng joins Bulls team-mate Derrick Rose in the All-Star Game - the first time the Bulls have had two representatives since the legendary Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen were selected in 1997.
The All-Star match takes place on February 26 in Orlando, and features the best players in the NBA's Eastern Conference and Western Conference facing off against each other.
